A bilingual (English/Spanish) Historical and Practical Theologian, Dr. Alvarez earned his Ph.D. from Fordham University in 2018. He is the author of Pentecost: A Day of Power for All People and Pentecostal Orthodoxy: Toward an Ecumenism of the Spirit. His teaching and research interests include early African Christianity, the history of Christian spirituality, Afro-Latinx spirituality and theology, Pentecostal mysticism and asceticism, and preaching in the African American tradition. An active member of the American Academy of Religion, he served most recently as Associate Provost of Lifelong Learning and Professor at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY where he provided oversight of the Doctor of Ministry program, the Center for Church Multiplication, The Beeson Center for Leading and Preaching, and the Center for Missional and Formational Training.

A widely sought-after lecturer and preacher, Dr. Alvarez has served in various ecumenical capacities, developing strong ecumenical relations around the world with clerics from a variety of Christian traditions. With more than 20 years of pastoral ministry, he has been the Rector of The Cathedral at the Gathering Place in the city of Rochester for ten years.
